About the event

What to Expect in Session One of the Webinar Series:

Session one acts as an introductory webinar that will share relevant background on how this series was conceptualized. Specifically, it will discuss how three wildlife co-management boards across the Eastern Arctic (Torngat Wildlife Plants & Fisheries Secretariat, Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, and Nunavik Marine Region Wildlife Board) are co-leading a project that aims to make Inuit Knowledge more accessible and influential in the management and harvesting of the Davis Strait Polar Bear Subpopulation. This webinar will hear from Derrick Pottle, a knowledge holder and bear guard from Rigolet, Nunatsiavut, on the role of Inuit knowledge in effective polar bear management strategies. This webinar will also share some exciting documentary film work about Inuit-polar bear relationships that the three co-management boards are leading.

Series Schedule:

  1. October 19, 2023          - David Borish, Derrick Pottle and Jamie Snook
  2. November 9, 2023       - Solomon Awa
  3. November 16, 2023     - Amy Caughey and Pitsiula Kilabuk
  4. November 30, 2023    - Dominique Henri

Context: Three wildlife co-management boards across the Eastern Arctic (Torngat Wildlife Plants and Fisheries Secretariat, Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, and Nunavik Marine Region Wildlife Board) are co-leading a project that aims to make Inuit Knowledge more accessible and influential in the management and harvesting of the Davis Strait Polar Bear Subpopulation. To support this focus, one idea that emerged was hosting a webinar series.

Goals: To foster understanding and highlight Indigenous perspectives by emphasizing the crucial role of Inuit Knowledge in polar bear management strategies.
