Katharina (Kt) Miller

KT Miller, a researcher and storyteller dedicated to bridging Indigenous knowledge and science. Her work with Polar Bears International and Indigenous Knowledge Keepers in Churchill, Manitoba, highlights intergenerational perspectives and the vital role of Indigenous wisdom in fostering sustainable human–polar bear coexistence.

This session explored Katharina Miller’s experiences and insights on Indigenous knowledge and polar bear coexistence, focusing on community engagement, research methodologies, and storytelling as a tool for gathering knowledge. She shared her journey from a non-traditional academic background to conducting research in Churchill, Manitoba, highlighting the importance of building relationships and conducting trauma-informed research. Tawney Lem, Tawney Lem is the Executive Director at West Coast Aquatic, based on Hupacasath and Tseshaht territory in Port Alberni. She is known for her extensive work in co-management, facilitating multi-stakeholder collaboration, and developing innovative governance models that integrate Indigenous knowledge with broader environmental management practices.

This session focused on Tawney Lem’s experiences and insights on co-management and collaborative governance, particularly through the work of West Coast Aquatic. She shared the history and challenges of building relationships among First Nations, governments, and stakeholders to manage resources like fisheries sustainably. Highlighting the evolution of roundtables as platforms for collaboration, she emphasized principles such as localized approaches, relationship-building, and viewing co-management as an attitude. The session explored successes, challenges, and tools for fostering meaningful collaboration in diverse settings.
